On the medical front, I found out I need a minimum of three weeks of radiation. Both my oncologist and radiation therapist were thrilled with my latest scan and think that it shows excellent progress. While this is good news, and I was pleased on some level - a big part of me just wants this all to be over, and not have my life dictated by medical appointments. My next one is on monday...
On returning home, I saw an email in my inbox from a college I was keen on attending this year in the UK saying that as a part of their policy, they cannot allow me to defer my place in the programme into which I had been accepted and that if I were unable to attend, I would just have to re-apply next year.
When you've had your life mapped out for the next two years in your head - it is really hard to imagine what to do with yourself for the next ONE YEAR... Even more, it is hard to accept that your plan just isn't working out like you were certain it would.

Aren't policies wonderful? They save the policy maker/policy communicater from thinking, empathising, finding creative solutions ... all very efficient (and dehumanizing).
On the bright side, think of all the stories you can write during the year you are not in the UK. I've been reading your other blog spot and like your surprise endings.
I am taken aback at the unprofessional attitude of the authorities in treating your application with such normalcy! Yours is a special case, for god's sake. The professional applies special rules here. I think it's a good thing you are not attending this institution. It stinks, if you ask me.
Ok-these guys are like the place I went to school. My dad died, I couldn't attend school for a week, I applied for leave, this was granted and then guess what? I got a Fail Grade in my Report Card that week! It took me a lot of effort to have that record expunged.
Werner Heisenberg formulated the uncertainty principle in quantum physics.Nothing is certain. The best of plans go awry once Heisenberg's principle takes off...and it does all the time.
Drop the Brits, they've never recovered from losing their colonies! This is a good reason for not considering this place.

I think you should drop a line to the College President about the decision of the Admissions Officer related to your case- even if nothing comes of it, it's worth the protest.
